Interventional radiology can be used to treat gynecologic and urologic conditions, such as uterine fibroid cysts in women or scrotal varicosities in men. The experts at Vascular and Interventional Specialists of Florida in Miami, Florida, commonly perform the following interventions:
Uterine fibroids are usually benign, non-cancerous tumors composed of fibrous tissue. The tumor usually range in size from 1 to 6 inches but can be smaller or larger. Uterine fibroids are the most common type of gynecological tumors found in women, especially if there is a history of uterine fibroids in the family.
Uterine fibroids often do not require medical treatment. In fact, most women do not know they have fibroids until they are discovered by gynecologists during annual pelvic exams. The following symptoms are associated with fibroids in the uterus.
If uterine fibroids run in your family and you are experiencing these symptoms, be sure to let your gynecologist know.
Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) – A minimally invasive procedure used to intentionally reduce blood flow to the fibroid tumor, causing it to shrink naturally. This is an outpatient procedure that is highly successful.
Hormone therapy – Prescribing hormone medication is also effective for shrinking fibroids. Some side effects that come with taking hormones include hot flashes and bone density loss.
Hysterectomy or Myomectomy – Some women may be candidates for surgical removal of fibroids (myomectomy) or their entire uterus (hysterectomy). Talk to a doctor about whether one of these procedures is right for you.
