Are you facing the prospect of getting a peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) line? It’s a straightforward procedure that makes sense for people who need long-term intravenous (IV) access. However, it’s normal to have questions about what to expect.
Understanding the process can alleviate anxiety, and our Vascular & Interventional Specialists team in Miami, Florida, is here to help. We offer PICC line insertion and removal, and our goal is to provide a smooth experience. Here’s what you should know about the process.
Traditional IV catheters are inserted directly into the veins in your hand or arm. While this method is convenient for infrequent intravenous access, it’s not a good option for people who require more frequent access.
Treatments like chemotherapy, antibiotics, or total parenteral nutrition (TPN) often necessitate long-term IV access, and PICC can be a better option. Unlike traditional IVs, PICC lines are inserted into a larger vein in your arm, usually the basilic or cephalic vein, and threaded through until the tip reaches a larger vein near your heart.
When you get a PICC line, we start by helping you get comfortable on an exam table. You can expect to lie flat on your back with your arm extended for the duration of the procedure.
Then, we clean and sterilize the insertion site, usually in your upper arm. We administer a local anesthetic to minimize any discomfort.
Using ultrasound guidance, we carefully insert the PICC line into your vein. You may feel some pressure or mild discomfort during this process, but it shouldn’t be painful.
Once the PICC line is in place, we confirm its position via X-ray to help prevent complications. We secure the PICC line in place with a dressing, and we may flush it with saline before sending you home.
In the days following the PICC line insertion, you may experience some mild soreness or discomfort at the insertion site. We usually recommend keeping your arm elevated and taking over-the-counter pain relievers if needed.
We will give you specific instructions on how to care for the insertion site. It’s important to follow the instructions closely. For example, you need to keep the insertion site clean and dry to prevent infection.
When it's time to remove your PICC line, the process is straightforward. We start by cleaning the insertion site and removing any dressings or sutures.
Then, we ask you to take a deep breath and hold it while we gently pull the line out. You may feel a slight tugging sensation, but the procedure is quick and painless.
Following PICC line removal, some bruising or tenderness at the insertion site is possible. However, any discomfort should subside within a few days. Keep the area clean and dry, and monitor for any signs of infection, including redness, swelling, or discharge.
Follow our instructions regarding wound care and activity restrictions. You may be advised to avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activity for a short period to allow the insertion site to heal.
PICC line insertion and removal may seem daunting. However, it can be an essential step in getting the treatment you need. Understanding the process and what to expect can help ease anxiety, and we’re here to answer any questions.
